Hi, I’m Lizzie. I’m 30 years old, and last year I was diagnosed with breast cancer while 15 weeks pregnant.
I discovered something was wrong while conducting a breast examination on myself. I found a lump in my right breast and was later diagnosed with breast cancer.
To treat my breast cancer, I underwent a single mastectomy, chemotherapy and radiotherapy.
I first started losing my hair during my second cycle of chemotherapy. At first, it came out in small chunks. In the end, I decided to shave my hair to try to take back a little more control.
Once I shaved my hair, I felt liberated. I felt great, and I felt like I had control again.
But once the dust had settled, I was left with an image in the mirror that I didn’t recognise anymore. It wasn’t me. It wasn’t Lizzie.
Losing my hair really affected my confidence. I had gone from looking like this to looking like that within a matter of days. I was used to having really long blonde hair, and now I was staring in the mirror and I had nothing. The contrast was so different.
Wearing a wig is so important to me personally because I feel cancer takes so much from you, emotionally and physically. Wearing a wig has enabled me to feel like me again.
I have been able to look in the mirror and recognise myself, and I think that is so important. It has enabled me to take on the world and take on cancer.
My advice to anyone who finds themselves in this situation, whether it is hair loss through chemotherapy or general hair loss, is to find something that makes you feel like you again.
Do your research, take each day as it comes, and remember that it does get better.
